How do we calculate unique recipients?

We define “Unique Recipients” as a metric used to determine the number of unique Recipients used within the Service during 3 months period (per quarter). A Recipient is a person receiving an email.

Key facts:

  • Each unique email address is counted as a unique recipient
  • The counter resets at the start of every calendar quarter (January 1st, April 1st, July 1st, October 1st)
  • A 5% overage is allowed to account for growth or turnover.

Examples

Below are some examples that will let you better understand how the unique recipient metric is calculated.

Example 1

A JungleMail user sends an email to John.Doe@contoso.com. Later, the same or another user sends a second email to the same John.Doe@contoso.com email address. The end result is that the unique recipient counter stays at 1 as only one unique email address was used in both newsletters.

Example 2

A JungleMail user from JungleMail Site 1 sends an email to John.Doe@contoso.com and another JungleMail user from JungleMail Site 2 sends a second email to the same John.Doe@contoso.com email address. The end result is that the unique recipient counter stays at 1 as only one unique email address was used in both newsletters, regardless from which site it was sent.

Example 3

A JungleMail user sends an email to John.Doe@contoso.com. Later, the same or another user sends a second email to the same John.Doe-admin@contoso.com email address. The end result is that the unique recipient counter is now at 2 as two different email addresses were used. This applies to aliases, name changes or alternative email addresses.
